The first ‘Come Dine with the Mayor’ event held at Abdul’s Balti House Restaurant in Leamore on Tuesday 29 October 2013 was a great success.

For a set price of £12 per person diners enjoyed poppadoms and chutneys before tucking in to their choice of starter and main course from the menu. Restaurant owner Abdul surprised diners with a delicious complimentary traditional Asian dessert. Diners were each given a score card and marked the restaurant out of 10 for its quality of food and customer service – a secret independent panel added up the scores and Councillor Richard Worrall announced the results at the end of the meal.

“This is ‘the Balti House’ in Bloxwich – there is NO competition!”, “Very friendly and a great atmosphere” “Absolutely exquisite food” are just some of the many comments diners had written on their score cards praising the restaurant and staff.

Restaurant owner Abdul Azad was delighted when Mayor of Walsall Councillor Mohammad Nazir presented him with a special certificate with a coveted star rating to mark the occasion and personally thanked everyone for supporting his charity appeal.

Restaurant owner Abdul Azad says “We are a family run business and have many loyal customers. I am so pleased everyone enjoyed the evening and that together we raised a substantial amount of money for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.”

One lucky diner won a special ‘Come Dine’ food hamper which had been kindly donated as a raffle prize. The exclusive hamper contained traditional balti serving dishes, basic ingredients and a recipe book so that the winner could enjoy cooking an authentic Indian dish in their own kitchen at home.

Mayor of Walsall, Cllr Mohammad Nazir says “I think this take on the popular TV show combined with a Michelin type star rating is really good fun – it’s a great idea. I’m really looking forward to dining out at the different restaurants across the Borough and meeting as many of the local residents as possible.”

The restaurant owners have all agreed to donate the profits from each exclusive dining event to the Mayor of Walsall’s Charity Appeal which is raising money for Acorns Children’s Hospice, St Giles Hospice Walsall and Midland International Aid Trust.

Booking is essential for the Come Dine with the Mayor events which are also being hosted at King Balti Ablewell Street, Walsall on Monday 11 November – tel 07906 776 691 and Cardamon Spice, High Street, Brownhills on Monday 2 December – tel 01543 454 787

In January Da Vinci’s Restaurant in Aldridge will be hosting an Italian themed evening with many more restaurants across the Borough also offering their finest cuisine to raise funds for the Mayor’s Appeal right up until the end of his term of office.
