Turkey & Syria Earthquake

Turkey Earthquake: In 2023, Professor Gatrad sent a team of doctors to Syria & Turkey within a fortnight of the disaster.

Pakistan floods – a whole village  built with 100 houses 2022-23.

Jubaida Gatrad Maternity Hospital

Opening

The Jubaida Gatrad Maternity Hospital was opened by Professor Gatrad and Ruth Lawson from the British High Commission in 2016. Took 6 years to build the cleft centre and the Hospital​

– free for the poor- incorporates the cleft centre

Mahomed Gatrad Limb Center

Opening

In 2011 a new centre was opened called the Mahomed Gatrad limb centre in Gujarat Pakistan in memory of Professor Gatrad’s father who travelled to and fro all over India to find a cure for polio as his Profs’ older sister was afflicted at the age of 6 months.

Malawi

Supplying water to victims of floods in Malawi -2015 – also built 100 toilets in the flood areas.

After the 1000 huts project was completed MIAT helped with improving sanitation.

Delivering blankets in Kashmir 2018 & MIAT also Built toilets for 6 girls schools in Kashmir, working with Oak Tree Trust.
MIAT has worked here with Caravan of Mercy to deliver aid safely. Prof Gatrad organized 60,000 blankets, from China, to each of these destinations: Syria, Gambia, India and Pakistan.

Environment

In 2017 professor Gatrad founded WASUP – World Against Single use Plastic to combat the scourge of single use plastic and the impacts of climate change.  This is a mini project of MIAT that is run by the professor. Now WASUP has ambassadors in over 50 countries. At MIAT and WASUP NO ONE gets paid.  

The 4 WASUP Project Objectives

  1. Raise awareness in all sectors of the community (schools, businesses, places of worship etc) thorough talks events and the social media
  2. Educate the children in schools about the dangers of plastic and teach them about recycling
  3. Litter picking both in streets and the waterways by all sectors of the community.
  4. Putting pressure on manufacturers and supply chains to use less plastic in their packaging or in some cases none.

Who Are We?

MIAT Walsall

Midland International Aid Trust (MIAT) was formed in 2003 and registered in 2005. It was founded by Mr. Mohammed Aslam MBE and Professor Abdul Rashid Gatrad OBE, who is a nationally and internationally known pediatrician was appointed CEO in 2005. They met up in 1992 when they first helped with the plight of people in Bosnia and Kosovo.

Midland International Aid Trust aims to provide medical care where there is an established infrastructure. It also provides humanitarian aid globally (over 20 countries) to those areas affected by natural and man-made disasters – such as wars
